Nikolas Francis will begin his role as an assistant professor in the Brain and Behavior Institute with a joint appointment in biology in fall 2021. Francis has been at UMD since 2011, moving up from postdoctoral fellow to his current role as senior faculty specialist in biology.
Over the last decade, UMD’s nominations yielded 37 scholarships—the second most in the nation.
Three biology faculty members were funded with the seed grants: Ricardo Araneda, Joshua Singer and Colenso Speer.

A new paper published in the journal Cerebral Cortex Communications by Crystal Lantz, a postdoctoral associate in biology, and Elizabeth Quinlan, a professor of biology and director of the University of Maryland’s Brain and Behavior Institute, shows that these changes in perceptual thresholds are reflected in the visual cortex.
