I study the use and development of multimodal communication, social cognition, social bonds, and social behavior in animal species that inhabit complex social worlds. I answer these questions in animals that form harems, a relatively unusual form of uni-male-multi-female unit in which unrelated adult females form enduring, often cooperative social bonds with one another and a single male. I conducted my PhD research on the plains zebra (Equus quagga) at Princeton University, and now I work with Dr. Wilkinson on social behavior in the greater spear-nosed bat (Phyllostomus hastatus).
