General Funding

NRSA Predoctoral Fellowships
The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA program is to enable promising predoctoral students with potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientists, to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research. Students usually apply in their second or third year once their graduate research has been established. UMD typically offers workshops/writing groups to help produce an outstanding application.
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
A type of fellowship/grant for graduate students early in their careers (i.e., 1st or 2nd year) that provides provides three years of financial support. UMD typically offers workshops/writing groups to help produce an outstanding application.
DOE Graduate Fellowship
The Department of Energy's Office of Science has established the Graduate Fellowship Program, supporting outstanding students who are pursuing graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship
Fellowships for graduate and postdoctoral students specifically for underrepresented groups.
Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study
A program offered through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) that provides awards to pairs of dissertation advisers and their graduate students based on what HHMI values and considers essential components of the environment, particularly the institution and adviser’s commitment to creating a healthy academic ecosystem and the student’s potential for scientific leadership.
