Summer/ Winter Teaching
Who can teach summer/winter term courses?
Faculty, post-docs, and advanced graduate students are all eligible to teach summer and winter courses. UMD Biology faculty who teach the course during the regular term have priority. UMD faculty and post-docs from other departments, and from other institutions, may teach summer/winter subject to the approval of the Biology Undergraduate Policies, Courses, and Curricula Committee.
Proposing a course
If you would like to teach a course summer or winter term, please consider the following:
1) Is it likely to draw a sufficient number of students to cover your salary and administrative costs (see Salary Guidelines below);
2) Does it serve undergraduates either by providing additional capacity in a high-demand course, or by offering something different from the regular term?
Any course proposal will be considered, but viability and service to the undergraduate program are key criteria in evaluating courses.
How and when do I submit a course proposal?
Interested instructors must submit a Course Proposal Form to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, who will compile relevant information, contact relevant regular term faculty, and forward the proposal to the Biology Undergraduate Policies, Courses, and Curricula Committee for review. Courses will be evaluated based on a) likely viability; b) service to undergraduates and fit with the undergraduate curriculum; c) fit with other summer/winter term courses being proposed.
